Dyne Test Fluids / Pens:
We have many customers who use our Dyne test fluids to test metal products for surface energy and surface cleanliness.

Whilst surface energy test fluids were developed for establishing the surface energy of polymer based substrates we have found that many people use them for evaluating the surface characteristics of metal products. In general terms the surface energy of metals is much higher than that of most surface contaminants: thus, the higher the Dyne level or surface energy (mN/m) also the cleaner the part is. The majority of our customers who use our Dyne Testing fluids for this application use bottles of Dyne Test Fluids, rather than Dyne Test Pens. Whilst pens are undoubtedly more convenient, rather than pens, we would always recommend using test fluids applied with cotton buds to reduce the cross contamination effect. NEVER use pens that work on the "felt tip" principal as the "wicking effect of the felt tip draws any surface contamination into the tip invalidating all subsequent results. Our Dyne test pens are by the nature of their design less susceptible to this, however, even our spring-loaded valve tip markers will eventually be overwhelmed by repeated exposure to contamination, resulting in a shorter operating life.

Bresle Test Kits:

The Bresle Test, Chloride Test on steel or Salt Test on steel using the Bresle Patch method will help to prevent coating failure due to salts such as chlorides and sulphates contaminating the surface prior to the coating application. This contamination can be tested for quickly and easily using the Bresle Test.

The Bresle Patches used in the Bresle Kit are manufactured to the highest quality with materials that contain no chlorides and are guaranteed to adhere to blast cleaned surfaces and not leak, complying with International Standards: ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9.

Easy to use, simply pour 10ml of distilled water into the beaker and determine the conductivity using the Conductivity Meter. Take a Bresle Patch and apply to the test surface. Fill the syringe with 2.5ml of test water and insert through the adhesive foam into the test chamber. Inject the contents, then extract back into the syringe. Repeat ten cycles of injecting and extracting, then transfer the test water back into the beaker. Measure the test water with the Conductivity Meter and deduct the initial conductivity reading from the result. Multiply the readings by 0.4 to give the quantity of salts in µg/cm² also known as ppm, or by 4 for the quantity of salts µg/m².

The maximum permissible surface density of salts on the steel surface prior to surface treatment depends on the type of paint to be applied and what the finished material or product is to be used for.

Surface treatment specifications must, therefore, state the highest permissible surface density of salts for each particular application.

Additional packs of Bresle Patches can be purchased to carry out further tests using this kit. The kit is supplied with 50 Bresle Patches, Conductivity Meter, Calibration Solution, 3 × 5ml Syringes, 25ml Beaker, 250ml Distilled Water and Carrying Case.

Soluble Salt Meter (SSM)

Similar to the bresle test, the Soluble Salt Meter will indicate contamination of soluble salts on blast-cleaned surfaces prior to coating but with the added bonus of a very short test cycle time.  It combines surface salt extraction and conductivity measurement in one tool, allowing convenient and ergonomic operation.  The hand held design provides a self-contained, easily transportable unit for soluble salt measurements.

The SSM and supplied fluid dispenser allow for quick and accurate injection of deionised water, automatic extraction of surface salts and conductivity measurement.  The tool comes complete with a backlit LCD display and easy to follow on screen instructions.  Up to a 1000 measurements can be stored in the internal memory.  This data can be downloaded to any PC and exported in Microsoft® Excel file format for use in any Coating Technical File (CTF) using the supplied software. The SSM is equivalent to ISO Standard 8502-9.

6 Easy Process Steps (approximate time taken = 1 minute)
  1. Attach the soluble salt meter to the surface
  2. Inject deionized water into the measurement chamber with one press of the dose bottle
  3. The meter automatically agitates the solution (approx. 45 seconds)
  4. Meter automatically takes reading
    • Displays reading on LCD screen
    • Stores value electronically
  5. Wipe remaining water from surface after removing SSM
  6. Flush meter by turning over and injecting water from dose bottle

Salt Contamination Meter (SCM400)

The SCM400 is compact, easy to use and is the perfect spot check for every industrial situation where surface contamination could threaten your business.  THe SCM400 convirms adequate cleaning of surfaces before coating, aiding the prevention of premature coating failures.  It shows salt build-up on vulnerable surfaces which can be treated to increase the lifetime of coatings.
