To obtain good adhesion to materials that have a low surface energy i.e. low or non-polar materials like PP, PE, HDPE etc. we need to modify the surface i.e. increase its polarity. Positioning your components in the highly active zone that exists just in front of an Atmospheric Plasma nozzle is an excellent method of increasing a materials polarity. The free radicals and other particles that exist in the highly active plasma discharge can attach to the material's surface resulting in the formation of additional polar groups on the material surface, these have a strong chemical attraction to inks, paint, coatings, adhesives etc. leading to significantly enhanced surface energy and therefore adhesion.

Cold.Active Plasma

The Cold.Active Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Hand Held Device is ideal for treating materials that would be damaged by the higher temperature conventional atmospheric plasma system. This low cost Cold. Active Plasma handset operates to a temperature of less than 40 degC and therefore places minimum stress on the material being treated. Flexible and easy to use, it is perfect for workshops, laboratories or during repair operations in the field.

The basic unit is supplied with a unique multi-functional holder for the plasma nozzle that doubles up as both a basic holder and as a "tripod" for hands free operation by using a simple foot pedal.

Its extremely compact design can be used at manual work stations or laboratories which makes it an excellent tool for manual retouching in difficult to access areas (e.g. electronics or fine mechanical jobs). The particle free unit can also be used in clean rooms. Read more.

The low surface energy of many polymer-based substrates often leads to poor adhesion of inks, glues and coatings. To obtain optimum adhesion, it is often necessary to increase the surface energy of the substrate to just above that of the material to be applied. Corona Treatment Equipment, Plasma Treatment Equipment and Flame Treatment Equipment all give good treatment levels and result in good wetting of the material over the surface of the substrate and so improves surface energy.

CORONA TREATMENT EQUIPMENT

Corona treating systems can be easily integrated into existing production lines or installed as stand alone corona treatment machines.

We offer 5 corona treatment solutions:
1. Rotating Electrode; This universal corona treatment system operates with special rotating corona electrode elements resulting in complete and uniform corona treatment of the parts. It offers a cost-effective method for optimising the adhesion properties of printing inks and coatings onto 3D parts made from low surface energy polymers such as polypropylene and polyethylene.

2. Fixed Electrode; This versatile system operates using a wide range of electrode systems ranging from simple "wire" electrodes, high performance "ball" electrodes or highly durable ceramic electrode elements resulting in complete and uniform corona treatment. Fixed electrode corona treatment systems can incorporate air jets to support the feed of parts through the corona treating station.

3. Spot Treater; This corona treatment unit creates a high voltage, low frequency corona discharge to treat the surface of 3-dimensional moulded or extruded plastic parts, profiles, webs, containers, etc. An airflow presses the corona discharge towards the substrate to be treated and a counter electrode is not necessary.

4. Narrow Web Treater; This system is designed for the corona treating of conductive and non-conductive narrow webs, labels etc. This type of corona treating system can be supplied to treat either one or both sides of the web and will accommodate widths from 100-500mm, running at production speeds of up to 150m/min.

5. Wide Web Treater; This corona treatment system is designed for the flexible packaging and printing industries and offers increased surface energy on webs manufactured from a variety of materials including; paper, plastic, metalised film and foil. The compact design of the corona discharge unit enables the equipment to be easily installed into new or existing extrusion, printing, coating and laminating lines.
